The greatest detectives of popular lore — think Sam Spade as played by Bogart, or Sherlock Holmes as played by Robert Downey Jr. — have always had a visceral and intuitive (if not ever openly acknowledged) appreciation of the Tao, as embodied in the I Ching and The Art of War.
The fusion of a film noir sensibility — gritty, worldly, cynical — with a Taoist outlook somehow seems about right for our odd, troubling, yet strangely hopeful times.
